This engaging, darkly comedic sci-fi film takes place in a possible near-future and highlights the gig economy and the failed utopian promises of big tech.
In this world an upgrade to Quantum computing is a necessity, and tech firms pit human “cablers” against robots in a competition to physically connect networks to huge magnetic cubes that power the technology. This supposedly easy-money venture demands arduous physical effort on the part of the cabler, who is tracked and hounded via smartphone.
Writer-director Noah Hutton focuses on the characters and revelations that make up an intriguing story, rather than the technology. Cablers Ray and Anna serve as our guides through a parallel world where corporations take advantage of people who don’t want to look any deeper into the illusions they create.
