Rated R. Last in the series "50 Years Ago at the Movies". The film tells the story of surly oil rig worker Bobby Eroica Dupea (Jack Nicholson, in his first major starring role), whose rootless blue-collar existence belies his privileged youth as a piano prodigy. When Bobby learns that his father is dying, he goes home to see him, taking along his waitress girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black).

Nicholson's nuanced performance of simmering frustration resonated with 1970 audiences caught between Nixon's "silent majority" and the troubled counterculture. A substantial hit, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor, and established Nicholson as a star.

Written by Carole Eastman and Bob Rafelson, and directed by Rafelson. Five Easy Pieces features Susan Anspach, Ralph
Waite, and Sally Struthers in supporting roles.
